From nature to industry – Harnessing enzymes for biocatalysis

A review article just published in the journal "Science" by Rebecca Buller and colleagues from the field of biocatalysis gives an overview of the achievements of the last five years and an outlook on future research and applications in this field.

Biocatalysis uses enzymes to carry out chemical reactions. This green technology has high impact in many areas – from chemistry, pharmacy, food technology to new applications such as plastic recycling. Initially relying on a limited number of natural enzymes, the variety of available biocatalysts has increased tremendously due to more and more sequences deposited in data bases, improved possibilities to design, evolve and identify enzymes with new properties with the help of machine learning, improved screening possibilities and new analytical methods.

The review published in the journal “Science” summarizes achievements within the last 5 years and discusses future research directions, challenges, and applications in the field.
