Soil Ecology Research Group

We are committed to the sustainable use of soil as a resource and to the long-term preservation of soil fertility. We deal with the ecology of soils and their protection against pollution. This applies to agriculture and forestry as well as to construction sites and contaminated sites.

We characterize and evaluate physical, chemical and biological soil properties. Thereby we identify undesirable developments and develop improvement concepts. We accompany the recultivation process of soils, carry out risk assessments for polluted soils and propose tailored remediation concepts. We are interested in the input of substances, their influence on soil properties and biological activity, as well as their degradation or relocation in the soil. We assess compacted sites and deal with soil erosion. In cooperation with partners from the private sector, we develop new types of irrigation systems that minimize water consumption.
