Take a closer look - INSIDE PREFS

In this new portrait, our module director Prof. Dr. Thorsten Merkle introduces himself and explains why hospitality management is his passion.

"I mainly work at the Institute of Facility Management, where I lead the Hospitality & Service Management competence group. This is where my passion lies because hospitality means more to me than just good service. High-quality products and customized services provide the basis for the "service experience".

In my private life, I live in Valais, where I am also a naturalized resident. I enjoy the imposing mountain landscape, which has a special charm at any time of year. We live with two cats and a young pug in an old house in a rather rural neighborhood.

Before joining academia rather late in life, I worked globally in hospitality management. Among other things, I created and implemented the catering and hospitality concepts for several FIFA World Cups. I can now put into practice in the master’s degree MSc in Preneurship for Regenerative Food System what I missed out on during those times. In the four modules of the Agro Food Project, we consider the social and ecological dimension as well as the economic one, thus enabling students to design a regenerative project themselves. Together with the lecturers involved, as module director I attach great importance to the practical applicability of the knowledge gained. I particularly enjoy the dialogue with the students. We learn from and with each other and I really appreciate the pleasant atmosphere."
