Since 2014, Dr Rafael Segundo is a Research Associate in the Electric Power Systems and Smart Grids group at the Institute of Energy Systems and Fluid Engineering (IEFE) of the Zurich University of Applied Science ZHAW in Winterthur, Switzerland.

He is leading the dynamic stability group within ZHAW and participates in the ERA-NET Smart Grid Plus project CloudGrid in collaboration with the consulting company STRI in Sweden and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU. He also leads one subtask within the Bulk Multi-Energy Grids working group in the second phase of the SCCER-FURIES in collaboration with its academic and industrial partners such as EPFL, ETHZ, Swissgrid and ABB.

Dr Segundo received a PhD degree from Imperial College London, United Kingdom in 2013. From 2007 to 2008, he worked in the Automation and Control group in the Corporate Research Centre of ABB, in Switzerland. He received his BSc in electrical engineering from the Instituto Tecnologico de Morelia and his MSc in automatic control from the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL), both in Mexico in 2005 and 2007, respectively.

From January 2013 to July 2014, Dr Segundo was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Electric Power Systems (EPS) group at the school of electrical engineering of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. During his time at KTH, he was involved in the European FP7 project iTesla in close collaboration with academic and industrial partners such as DTU (Denmark), RTE (France), STATNETT (Norway) and TRACTEBEL (Belgium).

Dr Segundo serves as regular reviewer for different IEEE and IFAC conferences and journals. Some of his research areas include but are not limited to: power systems dynamics and control, system identification, fault-tolerant control, wide-area monitoring and control, integration and impact of renewable energy sources in distribution and transmission grids and algorithms to calculate optimal location and sizing of energy storage systems.
