Completed Student Theses
Student work at the CAI typically has a method-oriented focus and contributes its own research in the context of an exciting application. We are very proud of the achievements of our students, who regularly outdo themselves, achieve excellent results, and often contribute to the latest research through their publications, as also shown through various prices. In the following, we briefly present selected recent works and the archive of theses in Bachelor, Master, PhD and further education since 2013. Details can be found in the linked full texts, if available.
Example Student Theses
Deep learning-based cell segmentation for rapid optical cytopathology of thyroid cancer
Bachelor Thesis (Computer Science)
Fluorescence polarization (Fpol) imaging of methylene blue (MB) is a promising quantitative approach to thyroid cancer detection. Clinical translation of MB Fpol technology requires reduction of the data analysis time that can be achieved via deep learning-based automated cell segmentation with a 2D U-Net convolutional neural network. Time required for auto-processing was reduced to 10 s versus one hour required for manual data processing. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-024-64855-2
Automatic recognition of Swiss German dialects based on audio data via phoneme transcription
Bachelor Thesis (Computer Science)
The thesis investigates an approach for the automatic recognition of Swiss German dialects based on audio data. The audio samples are first transcribed into phoneme sequences using the Wav2Vec2Phoneme or MultIPA models, which are then assigned to one of seven dialects using simple classification algorithms such as Logistic Regression.
Quis metietur ipsos metitores? Automated Metrics for Natural Language Generation in Theory and Practice
Master Thesis (Computer Science)
Automated metrics are commonly used to quickly and efficiently evaluate text generation systems, such as those used in machine translation. However, these metrics can sometimes incorrectly assess certain outputs, leading to skewed results when evaluating the overall quality of these systems. This thesis introduces a hybrid evaluation model that combines straightforward binary ratings from human experts and automated metrics to provide more accurate performance estimates.

End-to-End Deep Reinforcement Learning for Autonomous Racing Dynamics
Bachelor Thesis (Computer Science)
Traditional autonomous driving systems in Formula Student racing are manually engineered by teams who design, program, and test each subsystem, making them technically complex and labor-intensive. This thesis presents an end-to-end system that combines deep Reinforcement Learning with Proximal Policy Optimization and object detection to directly map sensor inputs to driving actions, achieving promising results in simulation with potential for future application by the Zurich UAS Racing team.
