Surgical Innovation Lab
The Surgical Innovation Lab offers a unique, controlled research and development environment for the development and evaluation of implants, surgical instruments, medical devices, and surgical procedures under conditions that closely mimic real-world scenarios. A fully equipped experimental operating room is combined with robot-assisted testing systems, biomechanical simulators, and custom-designed physiological test benches.
Implantations can be performed on human and animal specimens, followed by comprehensive biomechanical testing. Force and torque measurements, motion analyses, optical measurement techniques, and numerical simulations enable a quantitative, reproducible assessment of implant stability, joint function, fixation strategies, and surgical procedures.
A new surgical light with an integrated camera enables high-resolution audiovisual documentation of surgical procedures. In addition, surgeries and experiments can be transmitted directly from the operating table to the lecture hall or to external research and industry partners. This opens up new opportunities for hands-on teaching, interactive training, live demonstrations, and cross-site collaboration among surgery, research, and development.
Together with clinical, scientific, and industrial partners, we support innovative projects from the initial idea and feasibility study through prototype development and the creation of customized testing methods all the way to design verification. The Surgical Innovation Lab combines clinical reality with engineering precision, thereby creating the ideal conditions for efficiently developing new solutions, thoroughly testing them, and successfully translating them into medical applications.
