Bachelor's degree Energy and Environmental Engineering: Specialisation
During your studies, you will acquire technical knowledge and methods that enable you to design, plan, evaluate and operate energy engineering systems. In the final year of the programme, you choose one of three specialisations: Thermal Energy Engineering, Sustainability and Technology, or Renewable Electrical Energy Systems.
Thermal Energy Engineering
In this specialisation, you acquire in-depth competencies in the analysis, design and optimisation of thermal energy systems. The focus is on the storage, conversion and efficient use of thermal energy with heat pumps and refrigeration machines in industrial and building services applications.
Using practice-oriented examples, you acquire and deepen fundamental knowledge in the design of systems in the fields of wind and hydropower, sector coupling and synthetic fuels. Another key focus is the use of hydrogen as a future-oriented energy carrier in high-performance integrated energy systems. In addition, you address the analysis and treatment of exhaust gas and wastewater streams, as well as their potential use as raw materials.
Sustainability and Technology
You learn how to apply technological innovations in a targeted manner to support the sustainable development of the economy and society. In doing so, you develop digital and smart solutions and work on real-world challenges using methods such as design thinking and agile project management, implementing your ideas in your own prototypes.
A further focus is placed on implementation skills and entrepreneurial thinking. You acquire the knowledge needed to translate technological ideas into market-ready business models and engage with sustainability management in companies. In addition, you develop future scenarios related to energy, mobility and smart cities, analyse markets and trends, and actively contribute to shaping sustainable development.
Renewable Electrical Energy Systems
You acquire practice-oriented competencies for the planning, operation and optimisation of electrical energy systems with a focus on photovoltaics, energy storage and grid integration. This includes the entire photovoltaic value chain – from module production and system design to operation, monitoring and economic evaluation.
You learn how photovoltaic systems are combined with battery storage systems and efficiently integrated into buildings and power grids using power electronics. In addition, you deepen your knowledge of electrical energy systems and power grids, analyse grid operation, control and stability, and understand the causes of grid disturbances and blackouts as well as strategies for their prevention.
