EFSA: Call for data for Talc E 553b

EFSA has launched a public call for additional data to support the safety assessment of talc (E 553b) as a food additive. The request follows earlier conclusions that the available evidence was insufficient, as well as recent assessments by ECHA and IARC concerning the potential carcinogenicity of talc. Because food-grade talc contains particles in both the nano- and micrometre range, EFSA requires a nano-specific risk assessment. In particular, it is seeking further data on genotoxicity, oral absorption, distribution, accumulation and potential systemic availability. Interested companies, authorities and research institutions may submit relevant published, unpublished or newly generated data. The current deadline for submission is 31 July 2027.
