Nanoparticles and Colloids
We focus on the synthesis of surfactant-free nanoparticles that can be used for a variety of applications, such as cosmetics, topical medication, or delivery probes in vivo. In such applications the presence of certain types of surfactants is not desired, both for toxicity reason and effectivity. The the standard way to prepare polymeric nanoparticles is by emulsion polymerization, which involves the use of good emulsifying surfactants. However, surfactant removal from a nanoparticle colloid can be extremely difficult. The synthetic methods involve the use of ultrasonic radiation. Our goal is to observe we are able to observing their behaviour at liquid surfaces and interfaces.
Large Amphiphiles: Janus Particles
Janus nanoparticles can be considered as the next generation of surface and interfacialy active compounds. They are particularly interesting for use in designing novel smart catalysts that can move in concentration gradients.
Surfactants and Dispersant
The long standing interest in our laboratory is the development of new molecular surfactants or amphiphiles. We take particular interest in tuneable liquids and interfaces.
