Titel: User- Centered Design (UCD) of a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) for the use of Technologies in Neurorehabilitation.

Rehabilitation technologies such as exoskeletons, robotic end-effector systems, virtual reality platforms, and functional electrical stimulation are increasingly accessible in clinical practice. While these tools hold promise for improving outcomes in neurorehabilitation, therapists continue to face limited guidance on how to select and apply them effectively for individual patients. Existing guidelines often provide only general recommendations and rarely address the nuances of everyday clinical decision-making. As a result, therapists must conduct complex clinical reasoning processes that integrate diagnostic information, personal and environmental factors, functional impairments, and therapy goals—while also navigating the technical specifications of diverse devices. This highlights the need for decision support structures that facilitate evidence-informed and practice-oriented use of rehabilitation technology

This PhD project is embedded within the larger D-BOOST2 project, which aims to develop an AI based CDSS, that is informed by real world data, for technology supported neurorehabilitation. By contributing to the work packages on stakeholder needs and clinical data collection, this research will help to build the foundation for a user-informed AI-based CDSS. The expected outcome is to support the integration of rehabilitation technology into daily practice and contribute to more tailored, patient centered therapy with better therapy outcomes.

Titel: Identifying Stakeholder Needs and Assessing Clinical Feasibility of AI-Supported Clinical Decision Tools in Neurorehabilitation

This PhD project forms part of the research project Data-based Optimazation of Outcomes: Successful Technology-Supported Therapy (D-BOOST²), which aims to develop an AI-based clinical decision support tool (CDSS) designed to assist neurorehabilitation therapists in developing treatment plans using rehabilitation technology. Within this context, the PhD project will examine the patients’ perspective regarding the use of AI-based clinical decision support systems and key factors that facilitate successful implementation of new CDSS in clinical practice. By following a user-centered design approach, the research project aims to enhance the practical implementation of the tool and mitigate potential biases in it’s outputs. The AI-based CDSS is intended to support neurorehabilitation therapists in selecting rehabilitation technology interventions that are tailored to individual patient needs, thereby contributing to improved therapy outcomes.

Title: Digital storytelling as an approach to developing health-promoting narratives in pregnant women with a fear of childbirth after a previous traumatic birth experience: a qualitative narrative enquiry in the Swiss-German context

With a qualitative narrative research design, my study intends to explore how the creation of digital stories through a facilitated group-based digital storytelling (DST) process can support Swiss pregnant women in conveying rich accounts of their personal lived experiences of fear of childbirth (FOC) after a previous traumatic birth experience, and develop health-promoting attitudes, beliefs and behaviours toward their fear. FOC is a multidimensional condition with physiological, cognitive and behavioural components in its manifestation. The creative process of DST will allow pregnant women to elucidate its complexity and diversity by exploring and sharing different emotions, memories, and subjective experiences. The assumption is that through this facilitated DST process, pregnant women can construct a concrete and tangible shared reality and transform and reframe previously held narratives as they write, produce, compare and screen their own digital stories.

Titel: Gesundheitliche Chancengleichheit während Schwangerschaft, Geburt und Wochenbett

Studien zeigen, dass nicht alle Frauen in der Schwangerschafts- und Geburtsbetreuung gleichgestellt sind, auch in der Schweiz. Sozioökonomisch benachteiligte Frauen, sowie Frauen mit Migrationserfahrung weisen eine höhere Mortalität und Morbidität unter Schwangerschaft, Geburt und Postpartum auf, als der Durchschnitt der Bevölkerung. Sie leiden ebenfalls stärker an peri- und postpartaler Depression. In meinem Projekt interessiere ich mich für die systemischen und institutionellen Zusammenhänge, die diesen schlechteren Outcomes zugrunde liegen.

Titel: Arbeitssituation und -zufriedenheit von Hebammen in geburtshilflichen Institutionen der Schweiz

Es ist zurzeit nicht bekannt, ob die Schweiz über ausreichend Hebammen zur Sicherstellung der Versorgung von Familien unter der Geburt verfügt. In vielen Teilen der Welt stellt der Mangel an Hebammen eine Herausforderung dar, und auch hierzulande geben viele Hebammen ihren Beruf frühzeitig auf. Sind sie jedoch mit ihrer Arbeitssituation zufrieden, verweilen sie länger im Beruf.

In meinem Dissertationsprojekt untersuche ich die aktuelle Arbeits- und Personalsituation von Hebammen in geburtshilflichen Institutionen der Schweiz sowie ihre Zufriedenheit und ihr Wohlbefinden am Arbeitsplatz. Die daraus resultierenden Empfehlungen können geburtshilflichen Institutionen ermöglichen, die Personal- und Arbeitssituation zugunsten der Arbeitszufriedenheit ihrer Angestellten zu verändern, um Personalmangel entgegenzuwirken und damit die Qualität der Betreuung zu verbessern.

My PhD project investigates perinatal loneliness among parents in Switzerland from pregnancy to three years postpartum, employing a mixed-methods approach to uncover its prevalence, determinants, and lived experiences. This study incorporates a secondary analysis of Swiss health survey data, a national cross-sectional survey, and in-depth qualitative interviews with high-risk parents to provide comprehensive insights. Key aims include estimating how common perinatal loneliness is, identifying risk factors such as sociodemographic or psychological traits, and exploring parents’ personal challenges, coping mechanisms, and support preferences.

Titel: Advanced Practice Nursing – Die Kompetenz- und Rollenentwicklung im Schweizer Gesundheitswesen

Das Ziel meiner Forschung besteht darin, die Kompetenz- und Rollenentwicklung von MSc-Studierenden und klinisch tätigen APNs (Alumni) während und bis zu einem Jahr nach dem Studium aufzuzeigen; die ihren Masterabschluss (MSc) an einer Deutschschweizer Fachhochschule absolvieren bzw. absolviert haben.

Mein PhD-Projekt konzentriert sich auf eine Gruppe von Studierenden (Querschnittsdesign) und ist eingebettet in eine Gesamtstudie mit Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods Longitudinal Design. Über einen Zeitraum von vier Jahren werden die Kompetenzentwicklung (quantitativ) und die Rollenerwartungen sowie -entwicklungen (qualitativ) beschrieben, analysiert und zusammengeführt. Die Ergebnisse können Aufschluss darüber geben, ob und wie MSc-Studierende und Alumni ihre Kompetenzen und Rolle als APN (weiter-)entwickeln.

Titel: InterventionSTO Prevent Sexual Harassment against nurses – StopSH

Obwohl Arbeitgeber des Gesundheitswesens, wie alle Arbeitgeber der Schweiz, gesetzlich verpflichtet sind, Arbeitnehmende vor sexueller Belästigung zu schützen, gibt es zurzeit noch kaum evidenzbasierte Massnahmen zur Prävention solcher Übergriffe durch Patient:innen. Dementsprechend zeigen Studienergebnisse weltweit und auch in der Schweiz eine hohe Prävalenz von sexueller Belästigung im Arbeitsalltag von Pflegepersonen. 

Mein Dissertationsprojekt hat zum Ziel, ein evidenzbasiertes, komplexes Interventionspaket zur Prävention von sexueller Belästigung gegenüber Pflegepersonen ausgehend von Patient:innen zu entwickeln. Das im Rahmen des Projektes StopSH entwickelte Interventionspaket soll dazu beitragen, die Arbeitssicherheit von Pflegepersonen in der Schweiz zu verbessern und sowohl Gesundheitsbetriebe als auch Pflegepersonen befähigen, gegen sexuelle Belästigung vorzugehen.

Titel: Transition from being a clinician to being a health professions educator – professional identity formation in nursing (nextNE)

To educate well-qualified healthcare professionals, well-prepared nurse educators are essential. Nurses transitioning from clinical practice to educational roles must develop new competencies and a new professional identity. However, little is known about this identity formation process. This PhD project aims to explore the development of nurse educators’ professional identity and examine how structured educational programmes can support this process. Using a multi-method design, the project combines a scoping review, qualitative interviews with nurse educators across Europe, and a qualitative analysis of European postgraduate programmes for nurse and health professions educators. By integrating these findings, the project seeks to generate a deeper understanding of professional identity formation and provide recommendations for the design of educational programmes that support nurse educators during their transition from clinician to educator.

Titel: Building Organisational Capacity for Implementing and Sustaining Person-Centred Dementia Care in Nursing Homes

My PhD project investigates how nursing homes can successfully implement and sustain person-centred dementia care (PCdC) by strengthening their organisational capacity. Although PCdC is widely recognised as best practice, little is known about the organisational strategies and mechanisms that support its long-term implementation and sustainment. Embedded within the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)-funded PromPCdC project, my research follows a sequential multi-method design comprising a scoping review, focus groups, co-design workshops, and a Nominal Group Technique. The project aims to develop a realist-informed programme theory and a co-designed toolbox to support nursing homes in implementing and sustaining person-centred dementia care.

Titel: Freiwilliger Verzicht auf Nahrung und Flüssigkeit (FVNF) in Schweizer Pflegeheimen: Entwicklung einer ethischen Praxisempfehlung

Ausgangspunkt des Projekts ist die bislang unzureichende strukturelle Verankerung des freiwilligen Verzichts auf Nahrung und Flüssigkeit (FVNF) auf institutioneller Ebene. Zwar hat die Schweizerische Akademie der Medizinischen Wissenschaften (SAMW) diese Praxis als ethisch zulässig eingeordnet, ihre Empfehlungen adressieren jedoch primär einzelne Fachpersonen und nicht Organisationen. Zudem bleibt offen, wie die seit 2022 geltenden Richtlinien für zertifizierte Palliative-Care-Einrichtungen konkret im Umgang mit FVNF umgesetzt werden.

Ziel des Vorhabens ist es, Kriterien zu erarbeiten, mit denen sich FVNF klar von anderen Formen eingeschränkter Nahrungsaufnahme abgrenzen lässt, und gleichzeitig Pflegefachpersonen für die damit verbundenen komplexen Entscheidungssituationen zu sensibilisieren. Ergebnis ist eine anwendungsorientierte Handlungsempfehlung, die in alle Landessprachen übertragen wird. Diese soll die Versorgungsqualität verbessern, zur Klärung ethischer Dilemmata beitragen und den Schutz von Patient:innen sowie deren An- und Zugehörigen stärken.

Das Projekt leistet damit einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung des Schweizer Gesundheitswesens, indem es medizinische, pflegerische und ethische Perspektiven integriert und in konkrete praxisrelevante Leitlinien überführt. Ziel ist die Etablierung eines schweizweit konsistenten professionellen Umgangs mit FVNF.

Title: The impact of hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle on neuromuscular control and performance during functional assessments related to non-contact ACL injuries

To date there have been some studies addressing the effects of the menstrual cycle on the biomechanics and neuromuscular control during athletic movements. Even though some studies did measure actual hormonal levels, the analyses were primarily done based on the phase of the menstrual cycle. But it is not the phase of the menstrual cycle that acts on the bodily structures, it is effective hormonal levels that are relevant and need to be studied. Despite ongoing research, there is contradictory information on when ligamentous injuries occur in relation to the menstrual cycle. There is a lack of knowledge on how hormones influence biomechanical properties, and the variables related to ligamentous injuries. To understand the effect of hormones on biomechanics, it is necessary to consider hormonal levels and assess the combined effect of multiple hormones affecting the musculoskeletal system. 

The FeHBI (Females, Hormones, Biomechanics, Injuries) project aims to identify the influence of the hormonal profile on biomechanical variables during functional assessments related to non-contact ligamentous lower extremity injuries in female recreational athletes. 

My doctoral thesis forms part of the FeHBI study, which is funded by the Swiss National Foundation and conducted in the movement laboratory at the ZHAW. My research focuses on the impact of hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle on neuromuscular control and performance during functional assessments.

The overall goal of my PhD project is to understand the potential of using exergaming as a combined motor-cognitive dual-task training after an anterior cruciate ligament injury. To understand this potential, biomechanical movement patterns as well as cognitive and physical effects of an exergaming intervention will be compared to a single motor and cognitive task.

Titel: Ethical dimensions of digital technology-assisted physiotherapy: fundamentals for ethics education of physiotherapists

Nowadays, more and more digital technologies are used in physiotherapy and rehabilitation, such as robotics, health apps, wearables, virtual reality and telerehabilitation. The emergence of digital technologies in physiotherapy requires a new responsibility for physiotherapists to critically examine the ethical aspects of digital technologies and to evaluate their impact. This project aims to identify ethical dimensions and conflicts in digital technology use, physiotherapists’ and patients’ views, needed competencies and to develop case vignettes ethically relevant for physiotherapy practice. At the end of the project, a toolkit for ethics training will be available to facilitate reflection on ethical questions related to the use of digital technologies.

Titel: Individual hormone sensitivity in lower-limb biomechanics: detection, cross-task validation and responder characterisation

Sex hormones act on the tissues that carry and control human movement: estradiol and progesterone influence ligament and tendon stiffness, muscle properties and neuromuscular control, and their concentrations change systematically across the menstrual cycle. Yet three decades of research on the effect of the menstrual cycle on lower limb biomechanics have produced contradictory results. Small samples and calendar-based cycle phases have largely been addressed by the field, but one assumption has remained: that all women respond to their hormones in the same way. If they do not, a group average can be close to zero even when individual women show strong effects in opposite directions, and the variability usually treated as noise would be the effect of interest.

My doctoral thesis forms part of the FeHBI (Females, Hormones, Biomechanics, Injuries) study. The project aims to identify the influence of the hormonal profile on biomechanical variables during functional assessments related to non-contact ligamentous lower extremity injuries in female recreational athletes. My research asks whether individual differences in hormone sensitivity can be detected in lower limb biomechanics, whether they remain consistent across movement tasks, and what characterises the women who show them.

Titel: Improving the care pathway of people with knee osteoarthritis in Switzerland

Ich möchte herausfinden, inwiefern Empfehlungen aus klinischen Guidelines umgesetzt werden oder ob ein sogenannter „Evidence-Performance Gap“ existiert. Ich werde Erwartungen aus PatientInnen-Sicht klären und Entscheidungsfaktoren aus der Perspektive der behandelnden MedizinerInnen beleuchten, um den Behandlungsprozess zu optimieren.

Titel: Pain science education and graded sensorimotor relearning versus usual physiotherapy for chronic non-specific low back pain

Chronic non-specific low back pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and poses major challenges for affected individuals and healthcare systems. Although physiotherapy plays a central role in its management, treatment outcomes vary. A novel treatment approach combines contemporary pain science education with targeted sensory and motor retraining (RESOLVE). However, it remains unclear how effective this approach is compared with usual physiotherapy under real-world conditions and how consistently it can be implemented in clinical practice.

In my PhD project, I investigate the effectiveness of the RESOLVE approach for people with chronic non-specific low back pain in Switzerland. I also examine how the intervention is delivered in physiotherapy practice and which factors are associated with treatment outcomes. The findings aim to contribute to a better understanding of the management of chronic low back pain and to support the further development of evidence-based physiotherapy interventions

Titel: The Right to Participation in Child Healthcare: Young Patients’ Perspectives and Needs in Outpatient Settings

My PhD project addresses a persistent gap between children's internationally recognized right to participate and its inconsistent realization in clinical practice in Switzerland. As part of a broader SNSF-funded transdisciplinary project on participation in child and adolescent healthcare, my thesis focuses specifically on the child's perspective by investigating how children and adolescents experience participation in outpatient healthcare consultations across Switzerland.

Concretely, my project consists of a three-phase qualitative approach: a qualitative review synthesizing existing international literature into a child-perspective understanding of participation in outpatient care; a participant observation study of 50 to 100 pediatric and child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient consultations across five Swiss cantons, identifying situations that enable or limit participation; and semi-structured individual interviews supported by child-friendly materials, conducted with children and adolescents themselves and grounded in their own recent consultation experiences.

Titel: Health literacy of adolescents in Switzerland in an increasingly digital society

Gesundheitskompetenz (GK) befähigt Verantwortung für die eigene Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden zu übernehmen. Es gibt keine Daten zur GK von Jugendlichen noch über ihre digitale Gesundheitskompetenz (DGK) bekannt, d.h. wie sie digitale Gesundheitsinformationen suchen, bewerten und anwenden. Die Forschungslücke resultiert teilweise aus dem Fehlen eines validierten DGK-Instruments für Jugendliche. Forschung zu GK und DGK ist die Basis für gezielte Förderung des Zugangs zu (digitalen) Gesundheitsinformationen in Politik und Praxis.

Titel: Ask the Patient: Improving Swiss Healthcare Value through Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs)

Das Projekt «Ask the Patient: Improving Swiss Healthcare Value through Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs)», das in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institut für Public Health der ZHAW und Institut für Biomedizinische Ethik und Medizingeschichte der UZH durchgeführt wird, konzentriert sich auf die Implementierung generischer Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) im Schweizer Gesundheitswesen. PROMs sind standardisierte Fragebögen, die Patient:innen selbst ausfüllen, um über ihre funktionale, psychologische und soziale Gesundheit sowie ihre Lebensqualität zu berichten. Auf individueller Ebene fördern PROMs die gemeinsame Entscheidungsfindung und die Kommunikation zwischen Patienten und Gesundheitspersonal. Auf Bevölkerungsebene liefern PROMs den Politikern aggregierte Daten über die Wirksamkeit von Behandlungen und Gesundheitsdiensten. Dies ermöglicht eine effiziente Ressourcenzuteilung und ein nationales Benchmarking zwischen verschiedenen Sektoren und Bereichen. Dieses SNF-Projekt zielt darauf ab, eine solide Grundlage für die Entwicklung eines nationalen PROM-Programms zu schaffen.

Title: The Impact of Heat on Home Care Workers' Health and the Effectiveness of Adaptation Strategies

Project description: Der Klimawandel führt zu immer häufigeren und intensiveren Hitzewellen, die die Gesundheit von Menschen belasten können. Besonders gefährdet sind Berufe, die viel im Freien stattfinden – dazu gibt es bereits viele Studien. Wenig erforscht ist jedoch, wie stark Spitexfachkräfte in ihrem Alltag durch Hitze betroffen sind. Dabei haben sie gerade bei hohen Temperaturen besonders viel zu tun und müssen unter Zeitdruck von Patient zu Patient reisen.

Meine Doktorarbeit ist Teil des Forschungsprojekts REHEAT (Home caRE workers’ Health risks of Exposure to heAT waves), das vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds finanziert und von der ZHAW, SUPSI und Swiss TPH durchgeführt wird. Ziel ist es, die gesundheitlichen Belastungen von Pflegekräften durch Hitze besser zu verstehen und Schutzmassnahmen in einem randomisierten kontrollierten Versuch zu prüfen.

Das Projekt soll dazu beitragen, passende Strategien zu entwickeln, die Pflegefachkräfte bei Hitzewellen entlasten und ihre Gesundheit schützen. Damit leistet es einen wichtigen Beitrag für das Wohl dieser Berufsgruppe.

Title: Gender concepts and Nutrition In childhood (GeNI) 

Nutrition heavily influences the burden of disease and all-cause mortality. Childhood is a critical time window for the development of dietary behaviors as they can persist throughout the entire lifespan. Dietary patterns develop early, but little is known about when and how children and adolescents (C+A) start to develop ideas that certain foods and ways of eating are for boys or girls. The SNSF project GeNI is the first Swiss research project on gender and intersectional dimensions of nutrition in C+A aged 6-17 years. The main objective is to describe and understand dietary patterns and investigate gendered concepts of nutrition and food across age and gender. My PhD project is in the qualitative arm of the mixed-methods GeNI study.

Title: Policy implementation analysis of healthy nutrition promotion in Peruvian children and adolescents.

My research is focused on the analysis of the implementation of policies to prevent childhood obesity. The policy under analysis is the Peruvian National Law 30021 “Promotion of healthy eating”. I am applying a stakeholder analysis with governmental and non-governmental sectors in Peru. Also, I am analyzing the barriers and facilitators in the implementation of the promotion of healthy eating and nutritional education policy.  Besides, I am working with one of the beneficiaries' groups, the adolescents, to explore their perception in the implementation of the regulation of this policy.

Titel: LGBTQ+ YOUTHPATH

YoungLGBTQ+ adults experience health inequities and may face various barriers when accessing healthcare. Little is known about how healthcare systems respond to their needs and how specific and universal healthcare services complement each other. The SNSF project LGBTQ+ YOUTHPATH investigates healthcare needs and pathways among young adults in German-speaking Switzerland using a longitudinal mixed-methods approach. My PhD project examines how the Swiss healthcare system responds to the needs of LGBTQ+ young adults aged 18–25. It focuses on the organization of LGBTQ+-specific services, the integration of LGBTQ+-sensitive approaches into universal healthcare, and the interaction between specialized and universal services. The project aims to identify factors that facilitate or hinder equitable healthcare for young LGBTQ+ adults.
