With Alice Delorme Benites and Chantal Wright, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences has appointed two experts whose respective areas of expertise – technology and creativity – speak to the future of language mediation and the language industry. With their complementary linguistic and cultural backgrounds, the new leadership team marry their personal multilingualism with the Institute for Translation and Interpreting’s professional multilingualism. Delorme Benites and Wright bring to their leadership roles a thorough knowledge of the ZHAW on the one hand and a fresh external perspective on the other. The new team is excellently placed to continue the IUED’s successful engagement with the digital transformation of the language industry.

Alice Delorme Benites is a native of Lyon, France, where she studied Applied Languages (German, English, French). Upon completion of her PhD at the University of Siegen in Germany, Delorme took up a position at the Hochschule Konstanz where her responsibilities included the supervision of international students, teaching German as a Foreign Language, and grant capture. Delorme Benites has lectured in translation and applied linguistics at the ZHAW since 2013 and in August 2022 was appointed Professor of Human-Machine Communication.

Delorme Benites’s research focuses on machine translation literacy. In 2020 she was the recipient of a DIZH (Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions) Fellowship. Delorme Benites is also an experienced freelance translator and post-editor (working languages: German, English, Portuguese, French) and an accredited EU translator.

Chantal Wright hails from Manchester in the UK where she studied Modern and Medieval Languages (French, German) at Cambridge University. She completed her MA and PhD in Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. Wright has lectured in literary translation at universities in Canada and the United States, and has also lived and worked in Germany and Austria. Most recently she was the Director of the Warwick Writing Programme in the School of Creative Arts, Performance and Visual Cultures at the University of Warwick in the UK, where she founded the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation in 2017.

Chantal Wright’s research focuses on literary translation and she is also an award-winning literary translation practitioner (working languages: French, German, English). She has twice been nominated for the Marsh Award for Children’s Literature in Translation and received the inaugural Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation.

Gary Massey has been head of the Institute for Translation and Interpreting since 2015 and a member of the Institute for over 35 years. He has held various leadership positions, including membership of the steering committee of the Dolmetscherschule Zürich and convenor of the MA in Applied Linguistics. During his time at the Institute Gary Massey’s commitment to the professionalisation of translational activity was evident both in his own research and in his contributions to the development of the Institute’s educational offerings. He was a constant classroom presence, lecturing in translation (Ge > En and Fr > En), and in 2021 was elected Vice-President of the CIUTI.

Gary Massey’s research focuses on translation pedagogy, translational competence, cognitive processes of translation, current developments in the language industry, as well as the intersections between translation and related professional fields such as organisational communication. He will continue as an active researcher following his retirement.

The Institute for Translation and Interpreting (IUED) is the ZHAW’s competence centre for multilingualism and language mediation in continuing education, research and service provision. The IUED is a member of CIUTI, the Conférence internationale permanente d’instituts universitaires de traducteurs et interprètes, the oldest and most prestigious international union of academic institutions in the field of translation and interpreting training. The IUED is also a member of the European Commission’s European Master’s in Translation network.

The Institute for Translation and Interpreting is part of the Department for Applied Linguistics at the ZHAW. The Institute is home to 400 students and 70 employees and numerous freelancers.
