What you will study in Computer Science
Artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, virtualisation, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, digital health, autonomous systems, and distributed and mobile applications – today’s technology trends are built on computer science. While trends change rapidly, the underlying principles remain largely the same.
During the programme, you will develop a solid foundation across computer science, including programming and software development, communications and computer engineering, database design, internet security, algorithms, and theoretical and scientific fundamentals. Project and process management are also part of a computer scientist’s working life, alongside teamwork and communication skills.
In your final year, you can tailor your studies by choosing one of three specialisations – Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity or Software Engineering – or by creating an individual specialisation.
Part-time study
The Bachelor’s degree programme can be completed either full-time over three years or part-time over a minimum of four years. The part-time programme is designed to make it as easy as possible to combine studying with work. We recommend working no more than 60% of a full-time position during teaching periods.
Part-time students working in an IT-related role at 50% or more of a full-time position may be exempted from certain modules and have their professional work recognised for up to 14 ECTS credits.

Study models
The Bachelor's degree programme can be completed on either a full-time basis, with a study duration of three years, or on a part-time basis with a minimum study duration of four years. The part-time study programme is structured to ensure that students who are employed during their studies receive optimal support. A maximum employment level of 60% during the lecture period is recommended.
Graduates of Swiss baccalaureate schools can choose the work-study Bachelor's degree programme, which combines internships and study in a four-year model.
Computer science can also be studied in the international profile, which features specialist modules in English and an extended stay abroad during studies. In addition, students have the opportunity to spend an exchange semester at one of our partner universities during their Bachelor's degree programme.
Professional relevance
The Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science is highly relevant to professional practice. From the very first semester, students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in the scope of practice-based projects. In the project and Bachelor's thesis at the end of the study programme, students work independently on current topics and questions, often in collaboration with a company.
The lecturers in the Computer Science study programme are also active in research and development, and the findings from their projects – generally completed together with business partners – are directly incorporated into their teaching.
