Simple and durable surface functionalization of plastics
Plastics, like polyethylene, cannot be bonded without pretreatment. Usual preprocessing includes corona, plasma or flame treatment. These methods have severe drawbacks. In this project, a new primer is to be developed which shall allow for the bonding of, e.g., polyolefins.

AGEAIR II: Investigation of gaseous and particulate emissions of in-service AIRcraft and helicopter turbine engines, as well as the effects of performance deterioration of AGEing aircraft engines
All combustion engines emit a wide range of toxic emissions. On one hand, the gaseous fraction contains mostly nitrous gases (NOx), carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and sulfur dioxide. Thanks to ICAO regulations, NOx emissions have substantially decreased in recent years, especially by optimizing the combustion ...

Urban climate simulation study "Zurich West"
The city of Zurich is investigating ways to improve the quality of life with regard to the heat stress that the population has to endure within the framework of the specialist planning for heat reduction. To this end, the City of Zurich has presented a catalogue of measures that contains a variety of approaches to ...

AISA – Artificial Situational Awareness Foundation for Advancing Automation
This project addresses the topic “Digitalisation and Automation principles for ATM”. Exploring the effect of, and opportunities for, distributed humanmachine situational awareness in en-route ATC operations is one of the main objectives of this project. Instead of automating isolated individual tasks, such as ...

Defect Engineering, Advanced Modelling and Characterization for Next Generation Opto-Electronic-Ionic Devices
In the project Defect Engineering, Advanced Modelling and Characterization for Next Generation Opto-Electronic-Ionic Devices (OptEIon), we investigate the interplay between electron and ionic conductivity in metal-halide perovskite semiconductors. We plan to prepare samples, characterize the transient optoelectronic ...

Socially acceptable AI and fairness trade-offs in predictive analytics
Fairness and non-discrimination are basic requirements for socially acceptable implementations of AI, as these are basic values of our society. However, the relation between statistical fairness concepts, the fairness perception of human stakeholders, and principles discussed in philosophical ethics is not well ...

Thermophoretic Simulator
We are developing a novel type of nano-particle-collector. It will collect nano-particles in a very controlled fashion out of ambient air. Extending and applying an in-house Eulerian Lagrangian OpenFoam solver, simulations are used to optimize the device in terms of particle-deposition characteristics. ...

COVID-AIR: Influence of the COVID-19-lockdown on Swiss air quality
In order to manage the corona pandemic, the number of aircraft movements was reduced worldwide. Before the Federal Council's decided to release the first relaxation measures, only 10% of scheduled flights took off at the end of April at Zurich Airport. But road traffic also fell sharply in the Zurich region: a ...

Synthetic data generation of CoVID-19 CT/X-rays images for enabling fast triage of healthy vs. unhealthy patients
The automatic analysis of X-ray/CT images through artificial intelligence models can be useful to automate the clinical scanning procedure. Nonetheless, the limited access to real COVID patient data leads to the need of synthesizing image samples. The goal of this project is to use existing CT/X-ray image datasets ...

DATA4Des – Teaching Data Product / Service Design
This project aims at the development of novel teaching methods and teaching materials in the field of Data Products and Services in order to fill the existing knowledge gaps in the industrial environment. The project focuses on the interface between data science, customer-centric and agile product development and ...
-
Environmental assessment of various battery management systems for an electric waste collection vehicle
The aim of the project is to analyse the environmental impact of different battery management concepts for an electric collection vehicle using a life cycle assessment approach. The following concepts will be examined in detail: Use of a large battery that may need to be recharged during a longer break during the ...

Holoreach
Stroke is a serious burden for the health system and the affected individuals. Globally, around 16 million people per year experience a stroke for the first time, of which 5 million remain limited in their functionality and participation. Since improvements in functionality after a stroke take time and require many ...

Investigation of the suitability and optimization of ceramic aerosol filters
One of the reasons for the uncontrolled spread of the coronavirus is the transmission through so-called aerosols, smaller, free-floating droplet units that are distributed by air conditioning systems and respiration. Efficient filters therefore play an important role when using masks. The aim of the project is to ...
