Master of Science in Preneurship for Regenerative Food Systems
Initiate, develop and implement innovative business models as a preneur for sustainable and regenerative food systems.
Our society is facing major challenges from an economic, ecological and social perspective - global warming, loss of biodiversity, hunger, climate extremes, and many more. A linear view of the food system as a value chain is no longer sufficient due to its high complexity. We need entrepreneurs and pioneers to take action who understand the food system as a value network and who can connect the necessary disciplines and stakeholders.
The new MSc study programme trains you to become a professional with competences in the design of sustainable and regenerative food and nutrition systems. By jointly initiating, developing and implementing transformative and innovative business models, you will develop the relevant skills for future-oriented food systems.

You hold a Bachelor's and Master's degree in any of the following fields: business administration and economics, food and beverage science, food science, food technology, nutrition, food sciences, environment, environmental science, environmental engineering, agricultural science, biotechnology, hospitality management or facility management. Graduates with a bachelor's degree from other disciplines may also apply and may be admitted through an extended process.

The master's programme allows you to customize the curriculum according to your needs and competences. You will be closely supported by your coach. The main focus of your studies will be the Agro Food Project, a practice-oriented task which you will work on in an interdisciplinary team over the course of four semesters. In addition to the compulsory modules, you can also benefit from a large selection of elective modules from other Master's programmes at the ZHAW (Open Curriculum).
In order to meet the demand for agility and interdisciplinarity in the food industry, the Master's programme combines different teaching and learning methods (the so-called "4-o's" educational concept):
- online for independent knowledge acquisition and expansion,
- onsite for exchange with fellow students and experts,
- on the job for the necessary practical or industry proximity, and
- offline for the consolidation of new competences in other contexts.

The Master's programme focuses on sustainability, work empowerment for professionals in increasingly agile organisations within the food system, and the fundamental principles of preneurship (entrepreneurship, commonpreneurship, intrapreneurship).
The programme, with a total of 90 credits (ECTS), begins with the Navigation module and is then structured around the following four segments: Agro Food Project, Regenerative Preneurship, Agro Food Technology & Systems, and Individual Skills. Over four semesters you will attend compulsory and elective modules. During the Disruption Days, you will gain insights into disruptive topics outside of your everyday studies.
Our navigation module allows the development of basic skills relevant to master-level studies and at the same time enables students to find a common orientation at the beginning of the master's programme. Apart from this, students crate their individual study design during this module and form teams for the Agro Food Project.

|Agro Food Project||
You work on a comprehensive project over the course of four semesters in an interdisciplinary team. The topic of the project is chosen by the team, and can be developed independently as a business idea (entrepreneurship), together with business partners or researchers (intrapreneurship) or as a social initiative (commonpreneurship). You complete the module with an individual master's thesis focussing on an in-depth (research) question.
Compulsory modules: 4 modules, total 20 credits
Master’s thesis: 10 credits
Business management basics, along with the development of leadership skills and the elaboration of tools for innovation management enable you to initiate and implement sustainable changes within the food industry. Among other things, you apply this new knowledge and understanding directly in your own Agro Food Project.
Compulsory modules: 2 modules, total 6 credits
Elective modules: 9-16 credits
|Agro Food Tech & Systems||
You become familiar with technlologies (relevant both currently but also in the future) related to systemic change in the Agro Food Value Chain and gain a holistic perspective on the challenges facing the industry. You apply this new knowledge and understanding directly in your own Agro Food Project.
Compulsory modules: 2 modules, total 6 credits
Elective modulese: 9-16 credits
The Individual Skills segment allows you to develop both your profile and your skills on an individual basis and in a way which you yourself determine.
Scope: 9 – 12 credits
During the Disruption Days, your daily study routine is deliberately interrupted and you face new challenges. You test the skills you have acquired in an unfamiliar setting and in new forms of collaboration, and develop new skills in the process.
