Global warming: What contribution can personal responsibility and political measures make?
Voluntary action alone is not enough.
Are appeals to individual responsibility enough? Can we achieve the net-zero target in Switzerland if private individuals behave in a climate-friendly manner? In this study, we show that, realistically, individual responsibility can achieve at most 20% of the required reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
The rest requires political measures. Possible options include incentive systems (such as CO2 taxes on all products, CO2 duties on imports, subsidies, etc.) and/or laws that encourage all actors to behave in a climate-friendly manner. Taxes or subsidies on products and services could, for example, be calculated in such a way that the most climate-friendly options are the most cost-effective for consumers/users.
