Newcomer contests three competitions

For the first time, the ZHAW’s own Formula Student team Zurich UAS Racing scored in all disciplines at the Hockenheimring racetrack.

It’s been a successful season for the ZHAW’s Formula Student team. From 13 to 17 July 2022, the team achieved 196 out of a possible 325 points in Dübendorf. The team’s performance was rated in the off-track disciplines of cost and manufacturing, engineering design and business planning.

Unfortunately, the team then wasn’t allowed to take to the racetrack of the Formula Student Switzerland event: even after several adjustments following inspection, the brakes of the team’s racing car couldn’t pass the necessary tests. Nevertheless, the ZHAW team proved popular. According to the new CEO Moreno Apicella, they were asked for caps and T-shirts by jury members: “Because they were so impressed by us.”

Drive on racetrack is biggest success so far

In August, Zurich UAS Racing achieved its biggest success to date. The team managed to qualify for the Formula Student competition at the Hockenheimring racetrack in Germany, in which 100 teams from all over the world took part. The team passed all inspections and tests and was able to compete in the racetrack events for the first time. It also performed well at the Formula Student Alpe Adria in Croatia, where they reached 21st place out of 31 competitors. In the upcoming season, the team plan to equip their new electric racing car with a four-wheel drive and an autonomous driving system to enable the car to race without a driver. Zurich UAS Racing consists of 80 young engineers and has been competing in Formula Student events since 2019.
