Institute of Information Systems

“Artificial intelligence and digital technologies like social robots are more than tools – they are gateways to a new era. At IWI, we give this future a soul by uniting innovation with humanity, purpose, and sustainable values.”
Prof. Dr. Theresa Schmiedel
Head, Institute of Information Systems
The Institute of Information Systems (IWI) at ZHAW combines business administration and computer science to actively shape the digital future of business and society.
At the core of our work is the integration of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) into organizations — responsibly and with clear added value.
Our specialist units bring together expertise across key areas of digital transformation: from data science and data-driven business models to process science and automation, as well as the development and design of information systems. We research human-centered approaches in cybersecurity, IT management, and digital strategies, as well as new forms of technological interaction such as virtual reality and social robotics, which elevate collaboration between humans and technology to a new level. Our SIRA Lab focuses on the social intelligence of AI agents, enabling the responsible use of technology.
Through innovative approaches and active knowledge transfer, we foster dialogue between academia and industry, particularly through applied research projects and a broad continuing education offering, thereby making a direct contribution to the digital future of business and society.
Together with partners from industry and academia, we develop impactful solutions. We actively promote knowledge transfer, particularly through applied research projects and a broad continuing education offering, thereby making a direct contribution to the digital future of business and society.
