Dr Alina Nychyk from the ZHAW Center for Geopolitics & Competitiveness Interviewed by France 24
As Ukraine experiences public demonstrations for the first time since the war began, the ZHAW expert on Ukraine and Russia shares her assessment of the current situation.

The trigger for recent events is a new law that significantly weakens two key anti-corruption agencies. Dr Alina Nychyk, an expert on Ukraine’s relations with the EU and Russia who joined the Center for Geopolitics and Competitiveness (CGC) in June 2025, was interviewed by France 24 this July.
In the interview, Dr Nychyk warned of a dangerous concentration of power: “These agencies will now be controlled by individuals who are themselves directly influenced by President Volodymyr Zelensky. While corruption cases can still be investigated, it is unlikely that those involving those in power — at most, their opponents — will be pursued.”
Other experts interviewed by France 24 also criticised the new law. For Ukraine, which is in the midst of reforms and in the process of moving closer to the EU, the law represents a step backward in terms of the rule of law and transparency.
