Geopolitical Risks and Global Business

"When markets fragment and alliances shift, business as usual becomes business at risk."

Dr. Siyana Gurova, Research Associate & Lecturer ZHAW School of Management and Law

Political tensions, trade conflicts, and shifting alliances are fundamentally reshaping the environment for global business. Understanding geopolitical risks is now essential not only for developing strategies but for rethinking entire business models. At the Center for Geopolitics and Competitiveness (CGC), we analyze how major geopolitical developments impact companies’ operations, supply chains, and market positions. We support businesses in adapting to a more fragmented and uncertain global economy.

Focus Areas

Continuing Education

In an era of uncertainty, geopolitics has become a decisive factor for business success.

Global trade, supply chains and markets are increasingly influenced by political tensions, regional conflicts, and shifting alliances. Understanding these dynamics is essential for those who need to anticipate risks and make informed strategic decisions.

The CGC offers a wide range of part-time continuing education programs in geopolitics - from short courses (WBK) and the CAS in Geopolitics & Business Strategy to the Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Geopolitics, Strategy & Security. All courses are practice-oriented and feature integrated study trips. Participants also benefit from the knowledge transfer from our research and publication projects, as well as from our extensive network of experts.

Besides continuing education our current research and consulting activities focus on the following areas of expertise:

  • Geopolitical Risks in a Fragmented Economy: An Innosuisse-funded project has developed an innovative stress-testing framework that helps Swiss companies navigate an increasingly fragmented global economy and supports well-informed strategic decision-making.
  • Swiss Managers Survey: The Swiss Managers Survey takes the pulse of the Swiss economy each year, revealing the issues and challenges that matter most to companies today.
  • ZHAW International Business Podium: A series of events that addresses political and economic developments and brings together experts and scholars to discuss current issues.
