The Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research - Biomass for Swiss Energy Future (SCCER BIOSWEET) is a consortium of 8 Academic Institutions and more than 50 Cooperation Partners from private or public sector organizations. They focus on the engineering and implementation of biochemical and thermochemical biomass conversion processes with a high level of technological readiness and sustainability.
The establishment of SCCER is a key-element to realize the Energy Strategy 2050. It addresses the inter-university coordination of energy research across Switzerland and has been funded for the period of 2013 to 2020. The implementation of the SCCER is supervised by the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI).
The BIOSWEET Network postulates the “+100 Petajoule” bioenergy vision for the Swiss Energy Strategy 2050: woody biomass, biowastes and manure, as well as algae are seen to contribute additional 33 PJ each. This is roughly a doubling of the current energy supply from biomass.
In Switzerland the production of biogas from sludges, from organic wastes and from manure has a long standing tradition. More than 600 biogas plants produce near to 1200 GWh (or 4.3 PJ) of Bioenergy per year. However there is still considerable space for development and optimisation for most technologies. Additionally our resources still offer a large untapped potential for biogas. This is where creative as well as realistic solutions and concepts are sought to tackle this challenges. Within the SCCER BIOSWEET experts of the Environmental Biotechnology group investigate chemical, physical and biological methods for substrate pretreatment, analyze future potentials of hitherto unused organic resources and examine possibilities for the integration of biomethanisation steps (Power-to-Gas) into biogas plants.
