Description
Due to recent technological achievements and the transfer from military technology to civil applications, thermal imaging or thermography is currently undergoing a renaissance. Thermography is an investigation tool which advantages are undisputed in engineering, for example for the non-destructive testing of composite materials, or in the photovoltaic industry. Medical applications of thermal imaging exhibit a great potential. In the US, thermal imaging is an FDA approved procedure for breast cancer detection and benefits from many investigations. In Europe nonetheless, medical thermal imaging is only emerging yet. The aim of this proposal is to create a leading research group in medical thermography at the Zürich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). Emphasis will be given to most promising dermatological applications of thermal imaging. Four distinct but closely related thematic will be investigated, ranging from basic to applied research. To ensure the maximum impact and a fast technological transfer of the research outcome, the applied projects will be carried out in close collaboration with university spin-offs and industrial partners.
