Potential of use of biomass from alpine grassland

At a glance

Description

Agricultural policy 14/17 cancels or cuts animal contributions. This can lead to a reduction in livestock numbers in areas where production is often profitable only with direct payments (Alpine area). Meadows and pastures that are no longer used for fodder production can thus be put into a new recycling channel.

A GIS analysis will be used to quantify the usable areas and the biomass to be extracted from them. Different scenarios with varying area availability and biomass production are considered. In addition, the wood resources are to be determined for potential energetic use in the regions. This is also carried out by means of a GIS analysis, in which the forest areas and the respective wood growth rates or timber use are quantified on the basis of the 14 economic regions in accordance with the National Forest Inventory (LFI).
