A Theory of Strategic Dependence and the National Security Externality

How can strategic dependencies become a national security issue? Prof. Dr. Theocharis N. Grigoriadis shows how foreign suppliers can strategically exploit dependencies – and why resilience and alternative technologies are crucial.

Companies and states are increasingly dependent on foreign suppliers when it comes to essential resources and infrastructure. Such strategic dependencies can create significant risks for national security, especially when alternative sources or technologies are difficult to establish.

The research of Prof. Dr. Theocharis N. Grigoriadis develops a dynamic theory of strategic dependence and examines how foreign suppliers can strategically exploit an importer’s vulnerability. The model shows under which conditions dependencies persist and when investments in alternative technologies can provide a strategic way out.

As part of the International Business Seminar, Prof. Dr. Grigoriadis discusses the implications for resilient supply chains and national security. Drawing on Europe’s dependence on Russian natural gas before 2022, the talk demonstrates how this approach can also be applied to critical minerals, semiconductor supply chains, and transportation infrastructure.
