IMI Researcher Dr. Albena Björck Receives Best Impact Award from the Strategic Management Society
Recognition for research at the ZHAW International Management Institute (IMI): Dr. Albena Björck was honoured with the Best Impact Award from the Strategy Practice Interest Group at the Strategic Management Society (SMS) Annual Conference 2025 in San Francisco.

Dr. Björck’s award-winning paper, entitled “Towards a Model of Strategic Renewal: How Corporate Purpose Shapes Strategizing Practices”, was co-authored with Nicole Steller and Prof. Henk W. Volberda. The study explores how a clearly defined corporate purpose can function as a strategic mechanism for organizational renewal – not merely as rhetorical guidance, but as a connecting force between strategizing and organizing, ideals and pragmatism, symbolism and consequential action.
The research team based its findings on a long-term case study conducted with a for-profit organization in a contested industry – a rare empirical foundation that lends the theoretical insights particular relevance for management practice.
“Our motivation remains the same and our journey continues: to make this research matter — by exploring and connecting purpose, strategy, and renewal in ways that shape real organizational transformation,” says Dr. Björck.
This award recognizes not only the scientific excellence but also the practical impact of the ZHAW International Management Institute’s research on the field of strategic management worldwide.
