NEW PUBLICATION by Michael Hofmann in Materials & Design

NEW PUBLICATION: Melt pool geometry and process windows in PBF of 316L: Comprehensive single-source dataset and statistical modeling

Michael Hofmann has just published his first paper in the renowned journal Materials & Design on a comprehensive dataset of the melt pool geometry and process windows for PBF-LB/M printed 316L. In a comprehensive and systematic experimental campaign, he quantified the effect of laser power, scan speed, laser spot size, and powder layer thickness on melt pool width, depth, and area as well as on the process windows. This comprehensive, single-source dataset provides a valuable basis for melt pool modeling, process simulation, and optimization of the PBF-LB/M process.
Michael works with Prof. Thomas Mayer in the Mechanics for Modeling Group at IMES, and is a PhD candidate at TU Darmstadt/ IfW-MPA Darmstadt. The paper is the result of a close collaboration with Francesca Friso and Prof. Rene Radis from ZHAW IMPE, Prof. Christian Kontermann from the Trier University of Applied Sciences as well as Dr. Falk Müller and Prof. Matthias Oechsner from IfW-MPA and TU Darmstadt. This study is part of the research project "Reduced Residual Stresses through Support Structure Optimization in Laser Powder Bed Fusion" led by Prof. Thomas Mayer and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), grant number 20633).

The IMES team congratulates Michael for this great achievement!
