Dr. Wilfried Bürzle - New lecturer in the group Light Weight Design

We welcome Dr. Wilfried Bürzle as a new lecturer in the LWD group

With a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD from ETH Zurich, along with ten years of industry experience, Wilfried Bürzle brings in-depth expertise in structural and continuum mechanics as well as in the industrial maintenance of technical systems to IMES.

His professional career began at General Electric as an R&D Engineer in the field of Mechanical Integrity, where he conducted lifetime analyses of steam turbine components. After further training in Data Science, he joined SBB, where he spent six years contributing to the digital transformation of rolling stock maintenance—particularly through the implementation of modern maintenance concepts such as Predictive and Condition-Based Maintenance.

At IMES, Wilfried will teach the fundamentals of Engineering Mechanics. His research focuses on the development of hybrid digital twins—combining numerical simulations with data-driven methods. The goal is to apply these technologies to monitor structures and systems in operation, with an emphasis on condition-based and predictive maintenance.
