ZHAW Participates in National Quality Development Program for Physiotherapy

The Swiss Physiotherapy Association Physioswiss has launched a quality development program in outpatient physiotherapy on behalf of the Federal Quality Commission, aiming to improve the quality of care and patient safety, and to anchor physiotherapy in the Swiss healthcare system in the long term. The Winterthur Institute of Health Economics at the ZHAW School of Management and Law is supporting the project as a scientific partner.

The program aims to establish a learning system that not only records the quality of physiotherapy but also continuously develops it, for the benefit of patients, everyday practice, and the healthcare system. In addition to strengthening physiotherapy care, the project aims to further increase the visibility and recognition of high-quality physiotherapy services.

The project focuses on creating a practical quality development system that delivers real added value to physiotherapy practices and can be seamlessly integrated into existing practice processes.

"This is a great opportunity for ZHAW," says Dr. Florian Liberatore, scientific co-head of the project at the ZHAW School of Management and Law. "With our expertise in the areas of implementation research and quality development at the Winterthur Institute for Health Economics, we can make a significant contribution to how quality in outpatient physiotherapy is defined, measured, and observed in the future as part of a national monitoring system after the end of the project."

The huge significance of this is also confirmed by the second scientific co-leader of the project at ZHAW. "With this project, we are clearly fulfilling the mandate that the public places on us as universities of applied sciences, namely, to conduct applied research with a tangible impact on society. Here, this means better quality and greater efficiency in outpatient physiotherapy," comments ZHAW health economist Prof. Alfred Angerer.

The project will be launched in the current quarter with a context analysis to systematically record which quality development initiatives already exist in outpatient physiotherapy. The program is scheduled to run for around ten years.
