Hochperformante, hybride Multi-Core-Prozessoren, die für Handys und Tablet Computer entwickelt wurden, werden zunehmend in Embedded-Systemen eingesetzt. Sie beinhalten unterschiedliche Prozessorkerne auf einem Chip (CPU, GPU, DSP) und eignen sich für rechenintensive Anwendungen, wie zum Beispiel Video-/Audio-/Multimedia-Verarbeitung oder schnelle Messsysteme ohne zusätzliche spezialisierte Hardware. Echtzeit-Betriebssysteme und die optimale Aufteilung von Prozessen auf unterschiedliche Cores mit jeweils eigenen Programmiermodellen bilden dabei die wesentlichen Herausforderungen.
