Planning of Multimodal Mobility Hubs

Multimodal mobility hubs are central to tomorrow’s transport networks. We design and optimize hubs where rail, bus, bike, car, and pedestrians meet—ensuring efficient, sustainable, and user-friendly interchanges.

Overview

In an increasingly multimodal world, mobility hubs are essential junctions that connect different transport modes—rail, bus, bike, car, and walking. These hubs enable seamless, flexible journeys and are key to sustainable, user-oriented transport systems.

Today’s hubs offer much more than just transfer points—they also include services such as bike-sharing, parcel stations, co-working spaces, and more. This increased complexity requires new planning approaches that address spatial design, capacity, wayfinding, and operational efficiency.

Our work focuses on developing innovative tools and methods for the planning, simulation, and optimization of mobility hubs. We combine traffic flow modeling, operations research, and machine learning with agent-based and microscopic simulation to evaluate hub performance under different scenarios. Indicators such as passenger throughput, transfer times, and accessibility are used to compare and improve designs.

We collaborate closely with municipalities, transport operators, and infrastructure planners to implement solutions that improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and enhance the travel experience—contributing to an efficient and sustainable transportation infrastructure.

Key Projects

  • MOVEO: Intelligent Framework for Future Mobility

The international research project MOVEO aims to revolutionize how people and goods move across Europe. With partners from 9 countries, MOVEO develops a smart, integrated mobility framework that connects infrastructure (roads, railways, airports) with vehicles (cars, trains, ships) for more sustainable, inclusive, and efficient transport systems.
