Making ZHAW research internationally known
Two energy researchers from the ZHAW School of Engineering travelled to China and New Zealand at the end of November. The purpose of the trip was to present their research activities at several conferences and to get to know the Chinese Tianjin University better. More could soon come out of the newly established relationship.
Petr Korba and Rafael Segundo from the ZHAW Institute of Energy Systems and Fluid Engineering (IEFE) participated in a workshop at the municipal university in Tianjin, China. During the workshop they got to know the State University of the People's Republic of China, its laboratories and its history. "We also had the opportunity to talk to professors and students from Tianjin University and gain further insights," says Rafael Segundo. Afterwards, he and Petr Korba presented the ZHAW research activities. This gave the Chinese colleagues a good impression of what is being worked on in Switzerland.
Next stop: Beijing
From Tianjin, the trip continued to the Chinese capital to participate in a panel session entitled "Data-driven applications in power systems" as part of iSPEC 2019. At the conference, the two IEFE researchers had the opportunity to present their research work in front of about 100 people. This was followed by a discussion on, among other things, the use of data to improve the safety of power systems.
From China to New Zealand
After the event in Beijing, the two travelled on to Auckland, New Zealand. There they participated in the "Australian & New Zealand Control Conference" (ANZCC). Rafael Segundo gave a presentation entitled "Detection of Frequency Deviations for Monitoring of Power Systems".
Both Petr Korba and Rafael Segundo drew a positive conclusion from their trip. Rafael Segundo says: "We are preparing a proposal for a possible project between the ZHAW and the University of Tianjin". What exactly this project could look like has not yet been decided – but it should soon become concrete. Both parties want to get down to business before the end of this year.
