Low-tech greywater treatment and reuse: Integrating innovation and indigenous knowledge for sustainable water management in South Africa

Beschreibung

This project addresses unequal access to safe water and sanitation in South Africa by advancing low-tech greywater treatment solutions (LTGS) that are simple, affordable and locally maintainable.

Greywater is produced in large volumes at household level and, if treated appropriately, can reduce potable water demand for toilet flushing, laundry, and irrigation, and simultaneously treat wastewater. Yet untreated reuse poses health and environmental risks and acceptance remains as a barrier. The consortium will generate both evidence-based scientific knowledge and practical guidance to enable safe, culturally appropriate adoption of LTGS in low-income communities.
