Implementation of Action Plan against Food Waste (Phase 2)

Reducing food losses – data analysis and further development of tools to implement the action plan against food losses and waste in Switzerland

Description

Around 30% of all food produced worldwide is lost along the value chain—and food losses occur across all sectors in Switzerland as well. In April 2022, the Federal Council adopted a national action plan against food waste with the goal of halving avoidable food losses by 2030. A key element is the cross-sector agreement that the federal government concluded on 12 May 2022 with companies and associations in the food sector. The aim of the project is to build and maintain a robust, cross-sector monitoring system that systematically tracks the progress of participating companies.

Project phase 2: During the 2026–2029 phase, the cross-sector monitoring will be consistently continued and further expanded. New methods will be developed to additionally integrate agriculture into the monitoring system and to capture progress along the entire value chain more comprehensively (in line with the approach already applied in the other sectors). Data collection, analysis and reporting will be continued, ensuring systematic and comparable progress measurement for the participating companies and sectors.
