Use and Evaluation of AI Intermediaries

The image looks like a comic strip: a woman is sitting at a table in front of her laptop. There are various speech bubbles floating in the air, each containing three dots, a text box and a play icon.

Description

Generative AI chatbots are increasingly replacing traditional search engines as the default starting point for all kinds of information needs, and are thereby taking on a gatekeeping function for the digital public sphere. Since robust data on the adoption of, motives for using, and trust in these AI intermediaries among the Swiss population as a whole are lacking, the project plans a representative, trilingual online survey that captures usage patterns, perceived risks and opportunities, and the attribution of responsibility (users, providers, government).

The results will provide empirical insight into the current state and evaluation of everyday AI use in Switzerland, and thus a basis for evidence-based regulatory approaches.
