Building a Trusted Research Environment for Clinical AI and Digital Twins in Orthopedics (MedTwins Agil.IT)
MedTwins Agil.IT will leverage cloud services to create a Trusted Research Environment connecting the hospital IT system with scalable IT resources. This agile environment will pave the way for cloud usage in the R&D process of clinical AI and accelerate the translation of digital technology in healthcare.
Description
MedTwins Agil.IT aims to establish a cloud-based Trusted Research Environment (TRE) that securely connects hospital IT systems with scalable cloud resources. The platform will provide researchers and clinicians with a collaborative environment for developing, testing, and validating clinical AI applications and Digital Twins while ensuring high standards of data security, privacy, and ethical compliance.
Building on a proof-of-concept at the University Hospital Balgrist, the project combines cloud technologies with existing clinical infrastructure to enable agile research and accelerate the translation of data-driven innovations into clinical practice. The TRE will support secure data management, pseudonymization and anonymization processes, and facilitate access to shared datasets, code, and validation workflows.
A key objective is to create a collaborative ecosystem where clinicians and researchers can jointly develop and evaluate machine learning applications and multimodal Digital Twin solutions, such as digital representations of anatomical structures for surgical planning. By providing scalable computing resources and streamlined research workflows, MedTwins Agil.IT aims to reduce barriers to the adoption of AI in healthcare and accelerate the deployment of trustworthy and clinically relevant digital technologies.
