Soil-friendly food production – Local bonus system for climate-friendly and soil-friendly agriculture
The project aims to encourage farmers in Wädenswil to adopt more climate-friendly and soil-conserving practices. To this end, we collaborated with various stakeholders to develop a concept demonstrating how the population, local companies, and the city administration can collaborate to promote sustainable local agriculture.
Description
The “Klimafarming” working group of the Transition Town Wädenswil association, in collaboration with ZHAW and various experts, developed the project concept “Soil-Conserving Food Production”. Together, farmers and ZHAW assessed a range of climate- and soil-friendly agricultural practices. From these, they identified specific measures for Wädenswil aimed at promoting resource-efficient soil management, sequestering carbon in soils and trees, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Because climate-friendly and soil-conserving food production entails significant effort and additional costs, the project’s central goal was to co-create an innovative financing model that would ensure the long-term competitiveness of local farms.
The model envisions joint support from businesses, residents, and the City of Wädenswil—through mechanisms such as vignette purchases, annual membership fees, price premiums on farm products, and volunteer work.
To strengthen outreach and participation, the project also explored establishing a dedicated association and developing an online platform to market and promote these initiatives.
