Interim Use between Culture and Community: Dynamics of Urban Transformation Processes in CAMPO Winterthur

Temporary uses have undergone significant shifts since their emergence: whilst initially manifested as a counter-cultural movement advocating an alternative approach to urban planning, they have increasingly been employed as urban-political agents for neighbourhood revitalisation since the early 2000s.

The ‘CAMPO’ interim use project in Winterthur defies this narrative: situated at the intersection of cultural and community work, CAMPO offers a unique framework for systematically examining contemporary dynamics and interactions between spatial, social and cultural processes of transformation. As the headquarters of the foundation SKKG, CAMPO exemplifies the challenge of carrying a living cultural heritage into the future. Temporary uses such as workshops, studios and day schools overlap with the existing structure, creating a state of an ‘in-between’ that is both provisional and pioneering.

The research project will be closely linked to teaching at the University of Applied Sciences over two semesters, fostering a synergistic collaboration. Students will have the opportunity, through two seminars and a project work of their own choosing, to actively contribute to the investigation of CAMPO’s transformation processes.
