Web-Based Traffic Prediction Engine for Urban Traffic Simulation (TPE-Web)
This feasibility study develops a web-based interface for a novel Traffic Prediction Engine (TPE), enabling highly accurate and fast simulations of urban traffic flows to support data-driven and sustainable transport and infrastructure planning.
Description
Traffic represents a major challenge for the sustainable development of cities, especially as existing infrastructure can only be expanded to a limited extent. The goal of this project is to make the existing Traffic Prediction Engine (TPE) accessible via a web-based interface and enable its application in real-world planning scenarios.
The TPE is an innovative traffic simulation developed in Switzerland, based on a novel mathematical framework that significantly differs from existing systems and provides substantial performance advantages. This enables near real-time simulation of traffic flows and precise prediction of the impact of infrastructure measures.
Within this feasibility study, the TPE will be made accessible through a web-based platform. As a use case, motorized traffic in the city of Winterthur will be modeled and simulated. The project aims to evaluate usability, scalability, and practical value for stakeholders in transport planning, urban development, and research.
Furthermore, the platform establishes a foundation for collaborative planning processes and future applications, such as assessing CO₂ emissions, energy consumption, and sustainable mobility strategies.
Project goals
The project will deliver a functional prototype of a web-based interface for the Traffic Prediction Engine, enabling the execution and visualization of traffic simulations using a real-world use case (city of Winterthur).
The results will also include an evaluation of technical feasibility, usability, and value for different stakeholder groups. In addition, the project will identify potential for further development and applications, particularly in the field of sustainable transport planning and data-driven decision support.
