Determination of the Usability of AR-Headsets for the Training of Air Traffic Controllers in the Tower (skyguide-XR)
A scientific experiment will be used to test the suitability of AR technology in the form of headsets for training air traffic controllers. If the results are positive, the quality of air traffic controller training can be improved.
Result
To address the research questions, an experiment was conducted with 26 air traffic controllers. The results show, on the one hand, that the usability of the AR headsets is noticeably affected. On the other hand, the participants reported that none of the examined parameters were influenced in a way that would be considered unacceptable.
Overall, it can therefore be concluded that AR technology has reached a stage that allows its use in training scenarios for air traffic controllers. Consequently, the development of corresponding simulation-based training solutions can theoretically begin.
Description
Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that offers various possible applications.
In cooperation with skyguide and augment IT, the usability of the technology is to be tested with two state-of-the-art AR headsets. Not only the ergonomics of the devices will be tested, but also the impact on the workflow of air traffic controllers and changes in their behavior in a simulation environment.
