ZHAW Researching the Mobility of Tomorrow: Launch of the European MOVEO Project

How can Europe’s transport systems become smarter, more connected, and more sustainable? The EU-funded project MOVEO brings together partners from nine countries — including two institutes from ZHAW: the Institute of Data Analysis and Process Design (IDP) and the Institute of Sustainable Development (INE). At the demonstrator site in Winterthur Grüze, the teams are developing data-driven approaches to optimize multimodal transport hubs. The goal is to improve the management of passenger flows, enhance public transport services, and contribute to the mobility of the future.

ZHAW Contributes to MOVEO Project Kicking Off in Málaga to Shape the Future of Smarter, Smoother Mobility Across Europe

Málaga, Spain – May 29, 2025 – The MOVEO project has officially launched! On May 27–28, 2025, 16 partners from nine European countries gathered at the headquarters of project coordinator CEMOSA in Málaga to initiate a bold new step toward transforming how people and goods move through Europe’s transport networks.

With growing urban populations and a surge in shipping demands, today’s transport infrastructure faces unprecedented pressure. The MOVEO project – funded under the Horizon Europe program – to tackle these challenges by creating smart, integrated solutions for logistics and passenger flows, moving Europe closer to truly door-to-door mobility.

Towards Intelligent, Adaptive Traffic Flow

MOVEO brings together an interdisciplinary consortium of experts in transport engineering, data science, and infrastructure management. Together, they will develop and test cutting-edge tools, including Digital Twins, to model, optimize, and ultimately improve traffic flow across roadways, rail lines, inland waterways, and port systems.

At the core of the project are five real-world demonstrators, carefully selected to represent a range of infrastructure types, climate conditions, and stages of their life cycle. These sites will serve as living laboratories where MOVEO’s innovations will be deployed, validated, and refined. The insights gained will inform scalable solutions for traffic management across Europe and beyond.

ZHAW's Role: Making Multimodal Hubs Smarter

ZHAW is contributing to the MOVEO project through two of its institutes: the Institute of Data Analysis and Process Design (IDP) and the Institute of Sustainable Development (INE), both bringing their expertise in the optimization and sustainable planning of multimodal transport hubs.

One of the five demonstrators in the project is Winterthur Grüze station, which is to be transformed into a key multimodal transport hub in line with the City of Winterthur’s mobility strategy.

As part of MOVEO, the project team will collect data on car, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic at the Winterthur site, simulate passenger flows, and optimize the public transport offering. The aim is to improve the connectivity and quality of multimodal mobility services and thus contribute to sustainable urban development.

A Collaborative Step Forward

“This kick-off meeting is more than the start of a project—it’s the launch of a shared vision for a better-connected Europe,” said José Solís Hernández, project coordinator from CEMOSA. “By combining our technical expertise and local knowledge, we can build smarter, more resilient transport systems that benefit everyone—from daily commuters to international freight operators.”
