Winner of the IIW Kenneth Easterling Best Paper Award 2025

Congratulations to the ZHAW Team for winning the IIW Kenneth Easterling Best Paper Award 2025

Prof. Thomas Mayer, Paolo Capozzi, and Michael Hofmann from the IMES Institute of Mechanical Systems and Francesca Friso and Prof. Rene Radis from the IMPE Institute of Materials and Process Engineering received the prestigious IIW Kenneth Easterling Best Paper Award 2025 for their paper "Modeling and Simulation of the Anisotropic Thermal Expansion of Ti-6Al-4V Processed by PBF-LB/M" at the 14th International Seminar on the "Numerical Analysis of Weldability" organized by the IMAT - Institute of Materials Science, Joining and Forming at TU Graz, Austria.

This international award values the advancement of knowledge or practice in respect of mathematical modelling of weld phenomena and was handed over by the Conference Chairman Prof. Christof Sommitsch and the Vice-Chairmen Prof. Norbert Enzinger and Prof. Peter Mayr. It constitutes a great appreciation of the fruitful collaboration between ZHAW IMES and IMPE which recently led to the discovery of the yet unknown anisotropic expansion behaviour of additively manufacture Ti-6Al-4V that was published in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A. (https://doi.org/10.1007/s11661-025-07706-7).

In addition, our PhD candidate Michael Hofmann contributed to the seminar with an excellent presentation of his paper "Towards Accurate Thermal Simulations in PBF - A Novel Calibration Strategy for Gauss-Goldak Heat-Source Models".
