Lubricant Scuffing tests

Lubricant comparison in terms of scuffing behaviour, using staircase test procedure on ZHAW 91.5 mm back to back gear test bench

Description

For the planned switch to an environmentally friendly lubricant, its behaviour under high loads is being investigated in order to reliably rule out flank damage caused by scuffing. To this end, a staircase test is being carried out on the ZHAW 91.5 mm tension test bench, in which the gear pair is gradually loaded until the first signs of scuffing appear.

Direct comparison with the previous reference lubricant allows precise detection of differences in the critical load level, friction behaviour and damage pattern. The results serve as a basis for assessing whether the alternative lubricant guarantees the required operational safety and can be used in real applications without increased risk.
