A regenerative mulch mat made from regionally sourced biomass using fungal binding and saprophytic fungi for sustainable urban agriculture and viticulture (MYCO-MAT)
Description
MYCO-MAT is a biodegradable, mulch mat made from regionally abundant reed grass and bound by fungal mycelium. It is enriched with saprophytic fungi that support soil health. Designed for fragmented urban farming plots, community gardens, green infrastructure, and viticulture, it offers a practical solution to the conflict between ecological goals and operational constraints.
The mat suppresses weeds, stabilizes soil, retains moisture, and reduces labor. Unlike conventional mulch films, MYCO-MAT is plastic-free and regenerative. Its fungal binder eliminates the need for synthetic adhesives and enhances microbial diversity and nutrient cycling.
Developed by a transdisciplinary team including fungal material developers, researchers, urban farming practitioners, and wine and vegetable producers, the project will demonstrate MYCO-MAT’s versatility across urban and peri-urban contexts.
