REPIC - Decentralized biochar production based on climate friendly sludge processing
Description
Most areas of rural Lebanon suffer from inadequate wastewater management and corresponding investments. Current practices drive health issues and lead to vast amounts of greenhouse gases.
The proposed project will pilot the application of pyrolysis on locally collected dry sludge in Lebanon to create biochar for soil application. The innovation lies primarily in developing local sludge value chains and link them with the global carbon market.
The potential revenues from carbon removal certificates could substantially contribute to closing the global gap to reach the 3.4. billion people worldwide that still do not have access to safely managed sanitation.
