ZHAW Credits Swiss Military Leadership Training Toward Degree Programs

In the future, the ZHAW School of Management and Law will count Swiss military leadership training toward various degree programs. ZHAW is the first university of applied sciences to recognize Swiss military leadership training as work experience. This is regulated by a recently signed agreement between ZHAW and the Swiss army.

Anyone who wants to study at a university of applied sciences with a baccalaureate must first have one year of work experience. However, in the future, Swiss military leadership training will count as work experience for some ZHAW degree programs. Officers, senior non-commissioned officers, unit sergeant majors, quartermaster sergeants, and graduates of the cyber course will be credited with 52 weeks. For sergeants in the function of a section commander, 26 weeks will be granted. This makes a management career path much more attractive to high school leavers who wish to study at ZHAW, since an intermediate year of additional work experience is no longer required.

ECTS Credits for Officer Training

The ZHAW – like other universities and universities of applied sciences – also recognizes military training in the form of ECTS credits. Non-commissioned officers receive three ECTS credits toward some Bachelor's degree programs, while senior non-commissioned officers and officers receive six ECTS credits. Graduates of military leadership courses also receive six points toward some Master's degree programs.
