New mini wind tunnel in use

The Centre for Aviation has recently been operating a new mini wind tunnel which can be used to demonstrate simple aerodynamic phenomena at trade fairs and in schools.

The new mini wind tunnel of the ZAV Center for Aviation has been presented to the public at the general aviation trade fair AERO 2023 in Friedrichshafen. The mini wind tunnel was designed and manufactured by the two ZAV scientists and graduates of the aviation program Adrian Schödler and Tobias Zihlmann.

As such, flow speeds of up to 12 meters per second can be achieved in the test section of the mini wind tunnel, which has a cross-section of 350 mm x 350 mm. A particular highlight of the mini wind tunnel is its modular design, enabling its conventient transportation and usage at trade fairs or schools. Specifically designed to inspire a younger audience for aviation-related topics, the mini wind tunnel is used to showcase basic experiments which demonstrate basic aerodynamic relationships.

  • Dimensions of the wind tunnel: length: 3.4 m, width 1.0 m, height 1.7 m
  • Test section dimensions: 0.35 m x 0.35 m x 0.7 m
  • Total power fan: 600 W
  • Flow velocity: up to 12 m/s
  • Flow visualization: Mini Tufts
