Walz 4.0 - Crafts and universities shape the future of construction together

The interregional project combines traditional craft knowledge with digitalization and modern university teaching. The aim is to create sustainably effective educational models that combine practice and theory in a needs-based and solution-oriented way.

Summer-School „Palazzo Re-Use“, 2022

Result

Walz 4.0 develops four central results:

  1. Didactically innovative teaching-learning concepts: development of practical experience-based educational approaches that combine problem-oriented learning with digital platforms.
  2. Networks and cooperation: Development of cross-border networks between craftspeople, universities and companies to promote knowledge and technology transfer.
  3. Pilot projects: Standardization and harmonization of the Walz 4.0 continuing education degree through the creation of pilot action blueprints, validated strategies and action plans. Development and design of pilot actions in the form of curricula that integrate innovative, trans-sectoral learning and teaching concepts and include possible cross-border extensions. Definition of the requirements for a digital live certificate “Walzifikat 4.0”.
  4. Digital platform: Development and scaling of digital Walz 4.0 teaching and learning platform for cross-border networking as well as accumulation and practical application of knowledge. Platform functions as a comprehensive knowledge hub and e-learning platform as well as a marketplace for construction, planning, development and programming tasks.

Description

The construction industry in the Alpenrhein-Bodensee-Hochrhein region is facing growing challenges: acute shortage of skilled workers, scarcity of resources and increasing demands as well as the growing need to develop sustainable and innovative construction approaches.

At the same time, the loss of traditional craftsmanship knowledge and the insufficient integration of new technologies are threatening the future viability of the industry. The preservation and integration of craftsmanship knowledge in modern construction processes represents the core challenge for the future. In particular, the transformation towards a circular economy and the reuse of building materials require innovative approaches that combine craftsmanship knowledge with modern technologies and sustainable practices.

The aim of Walz 4.0 is to combine traditional craftsmanship knowledge and techniques with modern university teaching and research on an interregional basis using open and distributed learning methods in an innovative, sustainable, people-centered and appreciative way. Walz 4.0 aims to strengthen the skilled trades, introduce new technologies and formulate research topics with practical relevance in order to make the construction sector more sustainable and transform it.

In the long term, the result will be a resilient, climate-friendly and sustainable building culture that sets an example beyond the region.
