AI-based technologies provide valuable support in both the reception and production of texts in an academic context. We have focussed on how AI can be used as a resource for academic reading and writing in three areas.

Our topics
Machine translation

We promote the effective and critical use of machine translation tools. To this end, we surveyed more than 3000 people at Swiss universities with respect to the use of machine translation (MT). We have already shared our findings on best practices in using MT in numerous workshops and have also summarised them in three videos.
Automatische Textevaluation

We support students with academic writing and assist lecturers in supervising academic theses with the following two services:
- INTR-O: Introduction Optimiser offers students automatic feedback on the introductions to their Bachelor’s and Master’s theses and supports them with video tutorials, sample texts and formulation tips for crafting their introductions.
- The overview of tools for automatic text evaluation provides a didactically annotated collection of current feedback tools for academic texts and helps students, teachers and researchers to find the right tool for their specific needs.
Automatic text production

We conducted focus group interviews with 70 people to explore how lecturers are dealing with the sudden emergence of generative AI. In doing so, we identified trends, ideas and practices in the area of university teaching. We present good practices and open questions related to the considered use of generative AI.
