ZHAW digital - Research Portfolio

DIZH Fellowship
ZHAW digital serves as the interface between the ZHAW and DIZH. We will engage with DIZH by dispatching so-called "DIZH-Fellows". They are highly qualified researchers who will contribute their expertise to the common research cluster and thereby actively shape digital transformation. For the start of DIZH in the Spring of 2020, we have already selected the first 13 Fellows.

TRAIL: Transdisciplinary Robotics & AI Lab

Actors from academic and industrial institutions are undertaking a combined effort to establish Zurich, and Switzerland more generally, as a global player in the AI research and business space. The "AI Moonshot Roundtable" in October 2019 was the launching pad for the creation of this connected AI talent and research hub. The ZHAW has been involved from the beginning, alongside the Zurich Department for Economic Affairs, the Mindfire foundation, and ETH.
The transdisciplinary AI lab aims to become a meeting point for global AI experts with its physical location in Zurich. The ambitious goal: The creation of a "robot scientist" that learns in ways machines currently cannot, within the next ten years. It will be capable of conceptual thinking, acquiring knowledge and skills from lectures, interacting with humans and supporting researchers - primarily in the medical field - through creativity and curiosity. ZHAW digital is supporting TRAIL with its academic, organizational and communication expertise.
CLAIRE: Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe
The ZHAW is establishing the Swiss office for CLAIRE in coordination with other leading Swiss AI research institutions. CLAIRE is an initiative of the European AI community aimed at strengthening European excellence in AI research and innovation. To that end, CLAIRE is proposing a paneuropean confederation of AI research laboratories to eventually reach a similar influence as CERN. The ZHAW is an active member of CLAIRE and will primarily focus on building a network of industry partners. ZHAW digital has been able to recruit Ricardo Chavarriaga as the "Head of CLAIRE Office Zurich" and he will assume the position from January 1st 2020 onwards. His main tasks are to connect the CLAIRE office with local academic and industrial organizations and to embed the regional office within national and international networks.

AUTODIDACT – Automated Video Data Annotation to Empower the ICU Cockpit Platform for Clinical Decision Support
Monitoring diverse sensor signals of patients in intensive care can be key to detect potentially fatal emergencies. But in order to perform the monitoring automatically, the monitoring system has to know what is currently happening to the patient: if the patient is for example currently being moved by medical staff, ...
