Promoting mental health awareness is a key priority
The ZHAW uses targeted communication initiatives to highlight the importance of mental health. Two specific sets of guidelines for lecturers and line managers have been developed to further this cause.
In recent years, public awareness of the importance of mental health has increased significantly, and the topic is now firmly established among universities and other organisations. Research suggests that approximately 20 percent of the population is affected by mental health issues – with some stress-related symptoms considered to be even more widespread. The average prevalence among students is estimated to be slightly higher. Line managers and teaching staff play a crucial role in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. This is why it’s essential that they have the knowledge and skills required to support employees and students effectively, and to promote mental well-being both in workplace and academic settings.
Supporting guidelines
To achieve this, the ZHAW developed two sets of guidelines that provide lecturers and line managers with more security and orientation when dealing with employees and students who are under psychological stress. The guidelines aim to help them better recognise, understand and respond to psychological burdens and disorders. The university also created pocket-sized cards that provide staff with brief and concise instructions on how to respond to various situations. In addition, the ZHAW also offers webinars where participants learn to use both tools correctly in real-life scenarios.
