180 monoliths of a Geo-Montani-Nardetum pasture were exposed to combined elevated nitrogen (N) and ozone (O3) concentrations using a free fumigation system. In an additional experiment, the influence of a potential co-limitation by phosphorus on the effect of nitrogen was studied. After three years, elevated O3-exposure had no effect on productivity and species composition of the vegetation, but led to accelerated leaf senescence. In contrast, increased N-deposition resulted in higher biomass production and increased canopy greenness. However, the N-induced increase in productivity was limited by the availability of soil phosphorus. Of the plant functional groups (grasses, sedges, forbs, and legumes), sedges benefited over-proportionally from the additional N-deposition.
